The History of Africa goes way back with a wide range of cultures and tribes. Africa consists of the sub Saharan region, West, East, South as well as North Africa. All this has different people occupying the area with different cultures, norms and tribes.
Each community and society portrays diverse cultures. These have different dialects speaking different languages. Africa has thousands of languages spoken and more come up and are discovered. However, most societies have a bit of Swahili, Hausa as well as Arabic. While others adopted English due to colonization.
Some of the tribes include; Pygmies, Samburu, Senufo, Tuareg, Wolof, Yoruba, Zulu, Bemba, Ashanti, Berber, Bambara, Amhara, Bemba, Eulani, Ibos, Kikiyu, Maasai, Mandinka and Fon. Some of these however are very rare.
Africans have a distinguished art that is in form of wooden sculptures, masks, metal work, leather, painting, pottery, jewelry and dresses. All these were handmade and fully represent the African culture. For instance, the dressings like Gomesi, Kitengi worn by East and western Africa is a true symbol of African culture. These were to portray culture in different areas.
Music and dance is another of Africa’s historical milestones. This was different from any other music and dance because of its popularity among people. For instance, music was used as consolation in all states whether happy or sad. This is one of the original things that Africans have for example the musical instruments like drums, trumpets were only found in Africa.
Africa is known for its commercial empires and societies that were very powerful even before colonial rule. Some of these include; Ghana Empire, Ashanti Empire, Kingdom of Mapungubwe, Songhai Empire, Mali Empire, Benin Empire and many others. These were very powerful and had organized leadership.
Slavery is another thing that comes in mind when one mentions Africa. However, slavery was mainly meted to criminals as well as prisoners of war. This was a form of maintaining law and order in these communities. This was until the Arab slave traders took over and raided communities.
African history is one of the broadest topics one can take on but it has very interesting twists to it.
