Generation gap refers to differences of opinions regarding actions, beliefs, interests, politics and values between one generation and another. This exists between the young and old; what we now call different generations.
Generational gap in this era is widening over the years with little or nothing being done about it. The impossibilities of bridging this gap are becoming more each day due to the new and dynamic trends.
For instance, the young generation has embraced changes in new technology, open-mindedness while the older generation is all about patriotism and stuck in traditional ways of doing things.
Factors for generational gaps
There are a number of factors that have generally widened the generational gap in one way or another. These have not been necessarily intentional but have at one point contributed that is to say;
The use of language that is to say, different generations have different ways they use language. For instance, the older generation prefer to use local languages as well as formal language. Formal language like English for Uganda is in use anywhere say school, home and work.
The younger generation however prefer adopting to new things thus the use of Short language (SLANG). This is generally used in groups whereby a particular group of people know the meaning of the formed words.
Technological influences also widen the gap between the younger generation and the older generation. It is important to note that both generations have had a share of technology but not at the same level of intelligence. For instance, the older generation had the chance to see technology at the start with the first computer, mobile handsets and so on. The level of technology then was still very low and have gradually improved. The younger generation however is moving forward with more advanced technology like tablets, android phones, and laptops etc. This thus has created a generational gap to some extent.
Bridging the gap
Bridging the gap has been one of the hardest things to do most times due to the unwillingness of those involved to bridge the gap. For instance, in the terms of an individual’s interactivity and communication with another generation. Some people are not willing or are too proud to mingle with another generation.
Interaction between the younger generation and the older generation needs encouragement. For instance, one can decide to visit his or her grandparents in order to interact. Try and share information between generations. For instance, the young can tell the old about the new updates while the old can tell the young about their old days.
