Entertainment in Uganda is one of the most growing trends so far in the country. This ranges from movies, theatre, comedy, music and so many other forms of entertainment. Every year, the entertainment industry brings or comes up with something new and interesting for the revelers. From new music to new acts in comedy and theatre.
In Uganda, there are a number of people taking part in the entertainment industry. These give it the capability to grow more and more. Starting from the organizers, sponsors, performers as well as the audience itself.
Just like any industry, entertainment consists of different genres i.e Theatre, Comedy, Music, Recreation. There are a number of groups in each of these. For instance, under theatre, there is the Bakayimbira Drama Actors, The Ebonies.
Comedy is another entertainment field that Ugandans have a great interest in. This is as performers as well as audiences. Different performers have different acts that seem funnier by the day. The comedy field has introduced a number of groups that are known for their comedy performances. For instance Comedy Stores UG, the Crackers Comedy, Fun Factory and many others. Figures in the comedy filed include Pablo as well as Salvado, these are some of the renowned contributors to Ugandan comedy.
Music on the other hand is spread from region to region with upcoming artistes every other day, successful artistes as well as those that have been on the music scene for years (oldie). In the past years, there have been the rise of new artistes that have taken up the scene for example Sheebah Karungi, David Lutalo, Geo steady, Irene Ntale, Remah and Winnie Nwagi. Women have also come into the limelight over the years with more music albums and also leading the music industry,
However, other the past year or so, old artistes have come to the surface with new performance. This has been due to the increase in live band performance. Acts like the Afrigo Band, Joanita Kawalya, and Peter Ssematimba have come back to the music scene. People are starting to enjoy and miss the old music which has encouraged more of the old artistes to come back.
Each and every field of entertainment has its potential on the scene, however, some have put in more effort to see that their field gets more support from the audience than others. Just like any other country, we are doing our best to promote the entertainment field. Of recent, a campaign ‘Save Uganda Music’ has been ongoing and is giving promising results.
Radio and television stations play more of Ugandan music than before thus a potential of diversifying the entertainment industry.
