Rapper Nikko popularly know as NI opens up to our reporter about his hip hop journey.
Tell us about yourself
Am called Nikko, am a Ugandan by birth, by default actually. Am an artiste/poet/MC by profession/ trader hailing from the streets of Najjanankumbi.
When did you start your musical journey?
I started this hip hop thing like a decade ago, with a few friends while at high school and studying for my degree. We were a bunch of young ambitious men and we were into music so we were like let’s start a crew. The crew I started with was called Cash count, we were the four of us and from there the rest is history. Here I am now 10 years later.
What inspired you to venture into music?
When I was a young chap, I used to watch a lot of TV, back then it was Channel O. So I was so inspired by young black men in America and how they had so much power. They had it all under control like they were Alpha males. They inspired me to be something. That kind of energy and power was appealing to me, I wanted to be that. So from that day on wards, I was hooked and am like that’s what I want to be. A man, a grown man who can change his surroundings and who can talk through poetry. And the rest like i say is history.
Most people find hardships in such journeys, do you have any challenges you have faced?
Of course of course this is Uganda… financial constrains as you know like the rest. It’s so overwhelming and depressing when you have a gift and talent but find you do not have the resources to carry out that vision. This is very depressing and irritating. The second I can say is the music, hip hop wasn’t really appreciated in Uganda, so it’s that patience and waiting for the right time for people to really accept it. It’s actually the most challenging thing to me, you have to sit back and wait, keep putting out music, being consistent till the masses accept it. The hardest thing is being patient and waiting for people to accept this music to grow.
Besides music, what else do you do?
Am in real estate, I do real estate. What else can I say real estate.
Where do you see yourself in the near future (5 years)?
The near future five years? I see myself as a rich/wealthy man
Currently, what are you working on?
I am working on finishing my album, called Plan B. I am working with Urban Aksent Music right now and Black reign Incorporated so look out for that album called Plan B and I hope you feel it. Produced by Lawraid Vybz , mixed and mastered by Young J. Basalesale.
Any words to people out there (fans)?
