False Prophets have become an issue in many African countries today. People seem to be looking for ‘miracles’ from whoever is willing to proclaim one unto them.
They falsely claim the will and gift of prophecy. However, one maybe a ‘true’ prophet to some people while a ‘false’ prophet to others.
As people devote their lives in the different religions, one is right to ask, ‘Is it an era of ‘false’ prophets? this is because the Bible warns us of the time of false prophets and teachings.
For instance in Jeremiah 23:16 says
This is what the LORD Almighty says: “Do not listen to what the prophets are prophesying to you; they fill you with false hopes. They speak visions from their own minds, not from the mouth of the LORD.
This has come to question because of the many prophets that are emerging over the years, not only in Uganda but also in other countries especially within Africa.
Their acts and what they teach are a negative issue to a number of people as well as other religious leaders.
Characteristics of false prophets
For instance, it is alleged that some churches do not allow coins as an offering and therefore encourage their congregation to only use paper money.
In Uganda, the lowest paper money is a one thousand note which may not be afforded by many people.
Also, for one to be prayed for, they have to at least pay a particular amount of money. Many people are heard quoting “paying for a miracle.” such things have made people question prophets of today.
Over time, false prophets today have emerged in different countries. Each with a different flamboyant ways of prophesying and spreading their gospel.
For instance, in South Africa, a pastor had his congregation eat snakes, another had them eat grass and drink petrol.
From prophets or pastors who allegedly do not have to set foot on the ground during service to those with weird names like Breast and honey.
All these have been questioned by many people. However, the same prophets also have a great number of followers. Just as others know them as ‘false’ prophets, others follow them as ‘true’ prophets.
People should therefore always look at the telltale signs signs of a false prophet.
Names of false prophets in the bible
The bible warns Christians about false prophets in various books from the old to the new testament. For instance in the book of Acts 20:30-31;
…and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them. Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day…
False prophets in Islam are also present, the radicalization of Islam has led many young people to perish in foolish Jihad. Many Muslims continue to perish in the name Allah because they are being told to fight for the cause.
Musaylimah or Maslamah bin Ḥabib is believed to have claimed prophet hood in Islam. Islam believes that Muhammad was the last prophet for the Muslim faith.
Maslamah bin Ḥabib or the son of Habib was a magician who could perform miracles and proclaimed himself a prophet.
List Of False Prophets In The Bible
In the book of Revelations 20: 2, Jezebel is quoted as a prophetess of doom (We should not confuse this Jezebel to the one in the old testament)
But I have this against you, that you tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess and is teaching and seducing my servants to practice sexual immorality and to eat food sacrificed to idols.
According to first John 2: 18 – 19; the AntiChrist is a false prophet
Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us.
