Born Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi and famously known as Bobi Wine, the Ugandan Musician has been announced the winner in the just concluded Kyadondo East parliamentary by-elections.
Provisional results from the Uganda Electoral Commission (EC) tally center showed that Bobi Wine won with a landslide victory.
In late May 2017, Bobi became a candidate for parliament in an upcoming by-election for the Kyadondo East constituency. His house to house walk campaign still remains the most followed parliamentary election campaign in Uganda’s recent History
The Musician cum politician garnered more than 25,000 votes with his closest rival NRM’s Sebalu Sitenda getting a paltry 4,000 votes followed by FDC’s Apollo Kantiti with less than 2,000 votes.
NRM’s William Sitenda Sebalu petitioned the Ugandan Court of appeal which nullified the election of Apollo Kantinti as Kyaddondo East Member of Parliament (MP) citing lack of compliance with electoral laws. Apollo Katinti was elected in last year’s Parliamentary elections.
There were chaotic scenes in Kasangati on Tuesday after police blocked a campaign rally by Bobi Wine, and arrested him briefly. Bobi Wine was arrested after a mix up of venues for between him and NRM’s Sebalu Sitenda.
Bobi Wines supporters demanded for his release and eventually he was released.
By press time many politicians like former FDC president Dr. Kizza Besigye and former presidential candidate Amama Mbabazi had congratulated Bobi wine for the landslide victory.
